Wendigo – The Perfect Hunter of North America

In the cold forests of Canada and the great American plains there is said to be monster from Native American lore, believed to eat whole the unlucky hikers and hunters who cross it’s path.

Local tribes would speak of a malevolent spirit, a gigantic wild creature they called Witigo

Stalking it’s prey mostly at night it, it thives is harshness of the cold and the darkness. It’s desire for flesh is insatiable and the travelers it hunts often have little hope for survival.

Once human, it was transformed over centuries into a tall humonoid monster as it resorted to cannibalism after getting lost in the remote forests. In some lore, it has the ability to transform back into human form to better lure it’s prey to their deaths.

All of the descriptions of the creature vary slightly, traditionally the tribes speak of the Wendigo as being tall human-like with a heart of ice. In European mythos the Wendigo is generally said to have glowing red eyes, long yellowed fangs and a really long tongue. It’s body is matted with fur and some say it has the giant head of a deer, others the huge head of a wolf.

A Wendigo is believed to be a nearlt perfect hunter with speed, steal and mimincry at it’s disposal. A cold is sometimes said to precede it’s arrival, leading some to say it has weather controlling abilities.

In some texts it is referred to as the harbringer of death, it also lends it name to a type psychosis. The illness causes men to lose their minds and causing a great desire to eat human flesh. It’s said if you hear your name bein being spoken in the wind, the Wendigo has marked you as it’s next victim.

There are many who still believe that the Wendigo roams the woods and the prairies of northern Minnesota and Canada.
