Origin of the Minotaur

The Minotaur was one of the most famous and gruesome monsters in Ancient Greek mythology, usually portrayed with the body of a man and the head of a bull.

Minos rules the island of crete, and was a descendant of a high Minos standard lineage he was the son of Europa with Zeus. The God managed to turn himself into a white bull abducting the damsel and taking her to the island of Crete, the couple had three children Minos, Rhadamanthys and Sarpedon who would inherit the island of Crete Minos imposed his will against his brothers and took the crown of the island of Crete.

This island is located in a strategic position in the Mediterranean root and so it was a source of large profit for the kingdom given the trading agreements with several nations. Minos used his vast and accumulated wealth to build the Great Palace of Knossos, he had the help of the genius architect and inventor – Daedalus was his name.

Theseus battles the minotaur

Despite the development brought by his kingdom Minos was nonetheless a contested ruler, to consolidate his power Minos asked for the help of the gods – the king asked the god Poseidon to send him a bull to be sacrificed in honor of the god of the Seas something that would prove that the gods were on his side.

Poseidon agreed, and from the sea emerged a magnificent white bull as beautiful as the bull that Zeus used to abduct Europa. Minos was amazed by the size of the animal and decided to have him in his livestock as a breeder hence generating a superior breed of cattle and opted to sacrifice a random bull from his livestock instead of Poseidon’s bull. This enraged the god of the sea who would offer that animal to have it sacrifice for his own glory, Poseidon wouldn’t let such disrespectful acts to go unpunished.

The God turned the bull into a furious and indomitable animal damaging the kingdom of Minos, but his revenge was not yet complete with Aphrodite’s help Poseidon made Pasiphae Queen and wife of Minos fall in love with the bull. The Queen tried to approach the beautiful bull which rejected Pasiphae flirtations, demented by her passion for the animal she requested Daedalus help in order to seduce the great bull.

The minotaur clashes with Theseus

The creative inventor had an exquisite idea, he created a replica of a cow with leather and wood with a compartment where Pacifica would be lodged and so the Queen managed to consummate her union with the bull of Minos. This abominable Union gave birth to the Minotaur a creature that was a half man half bull, the birth of such ignominious beasts brought great shame to King Minos.

The Queen raised her son when it was a baby, but as the Minotaur grew his beastial and violent nature could no longer be controlled. With that being the case king Minos ordered Daedalus to build a vast labyrinth where the despicable Minotaur could be trapped the labyrinth became the domicile of the Minotaur and there he was fed with human sacrifices up until the arrival of the hero Theseus.
